RESUMO

Alu elements are non-autonomous Short INterspersed Elements (SINEs) derived from the 7SL RNA gene that are present at over one million copies in human genomic DNA. Alu mobilizes by a mechanism known as retrotransposition, which requires the Long INterspersed Element-1 (LINE-1 or L1) ORF2 -encoded protein (ORF2p). Here, we demonstrate that HeLa strains differ in their capacity to support Alu retrotransposition. Human Alu elements retrotranspose efficiently in HeLa-HA and HeLa-CCL2 ( Alu -permissive) strains, but not in HeLa-JVM or HeLa-H1 ( Alu -nonpermissive) strains. A similar pattern of retrotransposition was observed for other 7SL RNA -derived SINEs and tRNA -derived SINEs. In contrast, mammalian LINE-1s, a zebrafish LINE, a human SINE-VNTR - Alu ( SVA ) element, and an L1 ORF1 -containing messenger RNA can retrotranspose in all four HeLa strains. Using an in vitro reverse transcriptase-based assay, we show that Alu RNAs associate with ORF2p and are converted into cDNAs in both Alu -permissive and Alu -nonpermissive HeLa strains, suggesting that 7SL - and tRNA -derived SINE RNAs use strategies to 'hijack' L1 ORF2p that are distinct from those used by SVA elements and ORF1 -containing mRNAs. These data further suggest ORF2p associates with the Alu RNA poly(A) tract in both Alu -permissive and Alu -nonpermissive HeLa strains, but that Alu retrotransposition is blocked after this critical step in Alu -nonpermissive HeLa strains.

Robotic rehabilitation has emerged as a promising approach to enhance motor recovery after stroke, but there is limited knowledge about its efficacy in individuals who have experienced severe stroke. The study presented in this paper aims to analyze the effect of robotic therapy on the recovery of patients with severe stroke when combined with conventional rehabilitation therapies, and we want to observe whether there is a relationship between the clinical assessment provided by the therapist and the data recorded by the robotic device. Participants were divided into an experimental group and a control group, both receiving 15 sessions of conventional therapy in three consecutive weeks, but the experimental group underwent three out of five sessions per week with a robotic device. Both groups were evaluated using clinical scales, and in addition the experimental group was evaluated using an assessment game incorporated in the robotic device that provides session data such as the level of assistance needed by each user to complete the activity, or the score obtained in the game. These preliminary results showed that patients who received robot-assisted therapy had better motor function recovery compared to those who only received conventional therapy. In addition, it is also observed that the robot assistance needed by patients in the experimental group decreased as the sessions progressed, suggesting that robot-assisted therapy could be an effective tool for severe stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin C (vitC) enhances the activity of 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases, including TET enzymes, which catalyse DNA demethylation, and Jumonji-domain histone demethylases. The epigenetic remodelling promoted by vitC improves the efficiency of induced pluripotent stem cell derivation, and is required to attain a ground-state of pluripotency in embryonic stem cells (ESCs) that closely mimics the inner cell mass of the early blastocyst. However, genome-wide DNA and histone demethylation can lead to upregulation of transposable elements (TEs), and it is not known how vitC addition in culture media affects TE expression in pluripotent stem cells. RESULTS: Here we show that vitC increases the expression of several TE families, including evolutionarily young LINE-1 (L1) elements, in mouse ESCs. We find that TET activity is dispensable for L1 upregulation, and that instead it occurs largely as a result of H3K9me3 loss mediated by KDM4A/C histone demethylases. Despite increased L1 levels, we did not detect increased somatic insertion rates in vitC-treated cells. Notably, treatment of human ESCs with vitC also increases L1 protein levels, albeit through a distinct, post-transcriptional mechanism. CONCLUSION: VitC directly modulates the expression of mouse L1s and other TEs through epigenetic mechanisms, with potential for downstream effects related to the multiple emerging roles of L1s in cellular function.

Retrotransposons have generated about half of the human genome and LINE-1s (L1s) are the only autonomously active retrotransposons. The cell has evolved an arsenal of defense mechanisms to protect against retrotransposition with factors we are only beginning to understand. In this study, we investigate Zinc Finger CCHC-Type Containing 3 (ZCCHC3), a gag-like zinc knuckle protein recently reported to function in the innate immune response to infecting viruses. We show that ZCCHC3 also severely restricts human retrotransposons and associates with the L1 ORF1p ribonucleoprotein particle. We identify ZCCHC3 as a bona fide stress granule protein, and its association with LINE-1 is further supported by colocalization with L1 ORF1 protein in stress granules, dense cytoplasmic aggregations of proteins and RNAs that contain stalled translation pre-initiation complexes and form when the cell is under stress. Our work also draws links between ZCCHC3 and the anti-viral and retrotransposon restriction factors Mov10 RISC Complex RNA Helicase (MOV10) and Zinc Finger CCCH-Type, Antiviral 1 (ZC3HAV1, also called ZAP). Furthermore, collective evidence from subcellular localization, co-immunoprecipitation, and velocity gradient centrifugation connects ZCCHC3 with the RNA exosome, a multi-subunit ribonuclease complex capable of degrading various species of RNA molecules and that has previously been linked with retrotransposon control.

In conventional ultrasonic techniques, the necessary contact between the sensor and the product has constrained the implementation of ultrasound for quality control purposes in the meat industry. The use of novel air-coupled ultrasonic technologies provides multiple advantages linked to contactless inspection. Therefore, this study aims to compare the feasibility of contact (C; 1 MHz) and non-contact (NC; 0.3 MHz) ultrasonic techniques for monitoring the physicochemical modifications undergone by beef steaks during dry salting after different times (0, 1, 4, 8 and 24 hours). Experimental results showed that the ultrasonic velocity increased during salting, which was linked to the reduction in Time-of-Flight ratio (RTOF) and sample shrinkage (velocity C: R2 = 0.99; velocity NC: R2 = 0.93 and RTOF C: R2 = 0.98; RTOF NC: R2 = 0.95). In terms of the compositional changes provoked by salting, the velocity variation (△V) increased linearly (C: R2 = 0.97; NC: R2 = 0.95) with the salt content. As for textural parameters, hardness (C: R2 = 0.99; NC: R2 = 0.97) and relaxation capacity (C: R2 = 0.96; NC: R2 = 0.94) were well correlated with the △V through power equations. Experimental results reflected that the performance of the non-contact ultrasonic technique was similar to that of the contact technique as regards the monitoring of the physicochemical changes undergone by beef steaks during dry salting.

There remains much that we do not understand about the earliest stages of human development. On a gross level, there is evidence for apoptosis, but the nature of the affected cell types is unknown. Perhaps most importantly, the inner cell mass (ICM), from which the foetus is derived and hence of interest in reproductive health and regenerative medicine, has proven hard to define. Here, we provide a multi-method analysis of the early human embryo to resolve these issues. Single-cell analysis (on multiple independent datasets), supported by embryo visualisation, uncovers a common previously uncharacterised class of cells lacking commitment markers that segregates after embryonic gene activation (EGA) and shortly after undergo apoptosis. The discovery of this cell type allows us to clearly define their viable ontogenetic sisters, these being the cells of the ICM. While ICM is characterised by the activity of an Old non-transposing endogenous retrovirus (HERVH) that acts to suppress Young transposable elements, the new cell type, by contrast, expresses transpositionally competent Young elements and DNA-damage response genes. As the Young elements are RetroElements and the cells are excluded from the developmental process, we dub these REject cells. With these and ICM being characterised by differential mobile element activities, the human embryo may be a "selection arena" in which one group of cells selectively die, while other less damaged cells persist.

Meat processing involves different transformations in the animal muscle after slaughtering, which results in changes in tenderness, aroma and colour, determining the quality of the final meat product. Enzymatic glycolysis, proteolysis and lipolysis play a key role in the conversion of muscle into meat. The accurate control of enzymatic reactions in meat muscle is complicated due to the numerous influential factors, as well as its low reaction rate. Moreover, exogenous enzymes are also used in the meat industry to produce restructured products (transglutaminase), to obtain bioactive peptides (peptides with antioxidant, antihypertensive and gastrointestinal activity) and to promote meat tenderization (papain, bromelain, ficin, zingibain, cucumisin and actinidin). Emerging technologies, such as ultrasound (US), pulsed electric fields (PEF), moderate electric fields (MEF), high-pressure processing (HPP) or supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2), have been used to intensify enzymatic reactions in different food applications. This review aims to provide an overview of the enzymatic reactions taking place during the processing of meat products, how they could be intensified by using emerging technologies and envisage potential applications.

BACKGROUND: The aging of the population and the progressive increase in life expectancy in developed countries is leading to a high incidence of cerebrovascular diseases. Several studies have demonstrated that robot-assisted rehabilitation therapies combined with serious games can improve rehabilitation outcomes. Social interaction in the form of multiplayer games has been highlighted as a potential element to increase patient's motivation and exercise intensity, which professionals have described as one of the determining factors in maximizing rehabilitation outcomes. Despite this, it has not been widely studied. Physiological measures have been proven as an objective tool to evaluate patients' experience in robot-assisted rehabilitation environments. However, they have not been used to evaluate patients' experience in multiplayer robot-assisted rehabilitation therapies. The main objective of this study is to analyze whether the interpersonal interaction inherent in a competitive game mode affects the patients' physiological responses in robot-assisted rehabilitation environments. METHODS: A total of 14 patients participated in this study. The results of a competitive game mode were compared with a single-player game mode with different difficulty levels. Exercise intensity and performance were measured through parameters extracted from the game and the information provided by the robotic rehabilitation platforms. The physiological response of patients in each game mode was measured by the heart rate (HR) and the galvanic skin response (GSR). Patients were asked to fill out the IMI and the overall experience questionnaire. RESULTS: The exercise intensity results show that high-difficulty single-player game mode is similar in terms of intensity level to a competitive game mode, based on velocity values, reaction time and questionnaire results. However, the results of the physiological responses of the patients measured by GSR and HR are lower in the case of the competitive mode compared to the high-difficulty single-player game mode, obtaining results similar to those obtained in the low-difficulty single-player game mode. CONCLUSIONS: Patients find the competitive game mode the most fun, which is also the mode they report experiencing the most effort and stress level. However, this subjective evaluation is not in line with the results of physiological responses. This study concludes that interpersonal interaction inherent to a competitive game mode influences patients' physiological responses. This could mean that social interaction is an important factor to consider when interpreting the results obtained from physiological measurements.

The ongoing mobilization of active non-long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons continues to impact the genomes of most mammals, including humans and rodents. Non-LTR retrotransposons mobilize using an intermediary RNA and a copy-and-paste mechanism termed retrotransposition. Non-LTR retrotransposons are subdivided into long and short interspersed elements (LINEs and SINEs, respectively), depending on their size and autonomy; while active class 1 LINEs (LINE-1s or L1s) encode the enzymatic machinery required to mobilize in cis, active SINEs use the enzymatic machinery of active LINE-1s to mobilize in trans. The mobilization mechanism used by LINE-1s/SINEs was exploited to develop ingenious plasmid-based retrotransposition assays in cultured cells, which typically exploit a reporter gene that can only be activated after a round of retrotransposition. Retrotransposition assays, in cis or in trans, are instrumental tools to study the biology of mammalian LINE-1s and SINEs. In fact, these and other biochemical/genetic assays were used to uncover that endogenous mammalian LINE-1s/SINEs naturally retrotranspose during early embryonic development. However, embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are typically used as a cellular model in these and other studies interrogating LINE-1/SINE expression/regulation during early embryogenesis. Thus, human and mouse ESCs represent an excellent model to understand how active retrotransposons are regulated and how their activity impacts the germline. Here, we describe robust and quantitative protocols to study human/mouse LINE-1 (in cis) and SINE (in trans) retrotransposition using (human and mice) ESCs. These protocols are designed to study the mobilization of active non-LTR retrotransposons in a cellular physiologically relevant context.

Endogenous retroviruses are abundant components of mammalian genomes descended from ancient germline infections. In several mammals, the envelope proteins encoded by these elements protect against exogenous viruses, but this activity has not been documented with endogenously expressed envelopes in humans. We report that the human genome harbors a large pool of envelope-derived sequences with the potential to restrict retroviral infection. To test this, we characterized an envelope-derived protein, Suppressyn. We found that Suppressyn is expressed in human preimplantation embryos and developing placenta using its ancestral retroviral promoter. Cell culture assays showed that Suppressyn, and its hominoid orthologs, could restrict infection by extant mammalian type D retroviruses. Our data support a generalizable model of retroviral envelope co-option for host immunity and genome defense.

Moisture adsorption is considered a critical factor during production and shelf-life of puffed corn cakes (PCC). This study aims to develop and validate an instrumental method and a mathematical model for the characterization of the textural modifications caused by the moisture adsorption in PCC. For that purpose, PCC were stored at different relative humidities to achieve a wide range of water activities (from 0.1 to 0.8 at 22 ± 1 °C). A flexion-compression test was successfully validated in order to characterize the average textural properties of a PCC batch. A mathematical model considering consecutive elastic and plastic zones satisfactorily fitted (average VAR 99.65% and MRE 3.29%) the average stress-strain profiles of PCC and reported useful textural parameters, such as the deformability modulus (E), critical strain (εc), and n curvature parameter. The structural modifications caused by moisture adsorption led to the reduction in E and n and the increase in εc. Even minor changes on the PCC moisture content involve remarkable modifications of the textural properties, which has to be considered for industry and retail distribution.

The genetics of an individual is a crucial factor in understanding the risk of developing the neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). There is still a large proportion of the heritability of ALS, particularly in sporadic cases, to be understood. Among others, active transposable elements drive inter-individual variability, and in humans long interspersed element 1 (LINE1, L1), Alu and SINE-VNTR-Alu (SVA) retrotransposons are a source of polymorphic insertions in the population. We undertook a pilot study to characterise the landscape of non-reference retrotransposon insertion polymorphisms (non-ref RIPs) in 15 control and 15 ALS individuals' whole genomes from Project MinE, an international project to identify potential genetic causes of ALS. The combination of two bioinformatics tools (mobile element locator tool (MELT) and TEBreak) identified on average 1250 Alu, 232 L1 and 77 SVA non-ref RIPs per genome across the 30 analysed. Further PCR validation of individual polymorphic retrotransposon insertions showed a similar level of accuracy for MELT and TEBreak. Our preliminary study did not identify a specific RIP or a significant difference in the total number of non-ref RIPs in ALS compared to control genomes. The use of multiple bioinformatic tools improved the accuracy of non-ref RIP detection and our study highlights the potential importance of studying these elements further in ALS.

Porcine liver has a high nutritional value and is rich in proteins, minerals, and vitamins, making it an interesting co-product to alleviate the growing global demand for protein. The objective of this study was to analyze how the drying and defatting processes of porcine liver affect the physicochemical and techno-functional properties of its proteins. Two drying temperatures (40 and 70 °C) were studied, and dried samples were defatted using organic solvents. The drying process turned out to be an effective method for the stabilization of the protein fraction; however, when the drying temperature was high (70 °C), greater protein degradation was found compared to drying at a moderate temperature (40 °C). Regarding the defatting stage, it contributed to an improvement in certain techno-functional properties of the liver proteins, such as the foaming capacity (the average of the dried and defatted samples was 397% higher than the dried samples), with the degree of foaming stability in the liver dried at 40 °C and defatted being the highest (13.76 min). Moreover, the emulsifying capacity of the different treatments was not found to vary significantly (p > 0.05). Therefore, the conditions of the drying and defatting processes conducted prior to the extraction of liver proteins must be properly adjusted to maximize the stability, quality, and techno-functional properties of the proteins.

BACKGROUND: This study's objective was to conduct a multinational registry of patients with carotid body tumors (CBTs) and to analyze patients' clinical characteristics, treatments, and outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective study from the Carotid Paraganglioma Cooperative International Registry involving eleven medical centers in Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Spain, of all patients with a CBT who underwent resection between 2009 and 2019. RESULTS: A total of 1432 patients with a CBT surgically treated were included. Median patient age was 54 years (range: 45-63 years), and 82.9% (1184) of the study cohort were female. While at low altitude, the proportion of female-to-male cases was 2:1, at high altitude, this proportion increased to 8:1, with statistically significant differences (p = .022). Median operative time was 139 min (range: 110-180 min), while median operative blood loss was 250 ml (range: 100-500 ml), with statistically significant difference in increased blood loss (p = .001) and operative time (p = .001) with a higher Shamblin classification. Eight (0.6%) patients suffered stroke. Univariate analysis analyzing for possible factors associated with increased odds of stroke revealed intraoperative vascular lesion to present an OR of 2.37 [CI 95%; 1.19-4.75] (p = 0.001). In 245 (17.1%), a cranial nerve injury was reported. Seven (0.5%) deaths were recorded. CONCLUSION: The most common CBT type on this cohort was hyperplasic, which might be partially explained by the high altitudes where these patients lived. Increased blood loss and operative time were associated with a higher Shamblin classification, and the risk of stroke was associated with patients presenting transoperative vascular lesions.

The retrotransposon LINE-1 (L1) is central to the recent evolutionary history of the human genome and continues to drive genetic diversity and germline pathogenesis. However, the spatiotemporal extent and biological significance of somatic L1 activity are poorly defined and are virtually unexplored in other primates. From a single L1 lineage active at the divergence of apes and Old World monkeys, successive L1 subfamilies have emerged in each descendant primate germline. As revealed by case studies, the presently active human L1 subfamily can also mobilize during embryonic and brain development in vivo. It is unknown whether nonhuman primate L1s can similarly generate somatic insertions in the brain. Here we applied approximately 40× single-cell whole-genome sequencing (scWGS), as well as retrotransposon capture sequencing (RC-seq), to 20 hippocampal neurons from two rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). In one animal, we detected and PCR-validated a somatic L1 insertion that generated target site duplications, carried a short 5' transduction, and was present in ∼7% of hippocampal neurons but absent from cerebellum and nonbrain tissues. The corresponding donor L1 allele was exceptionally mobile in vitro and was embedded in PRDM4, a gene expressed throughout development and in neural stem cells. Nanopore long-read methylome and RNA-seq transcriptome analyses indicated young retrotransposon subfamily activation in the early embryo, followed by repression in adult tissues. These data highlight endogenous macaque L1 retrotransposition potential, provide prototypical evidence of L1-mediated somatic mosaicism in a nonhuman primate, and allude to L1 mobility in the brain over the past 30 million years of human evolution.

Current demand of consumers for healthy and sustainable food products has led the industry to search for different sources of plant protein isolates and concentrates. Legumes represent an excellent nonanimal protein source with high-protein content. Legume species are distributed in a wide range of ecological conditions, including regions with drought conditions, making them a sustainable crop in a context of global warming. However, their use as human food is limited by the presence of antinutritional factors, such as protease inhibitors, lectins, phytates, and alkaloids, which have adverse nutritional effects. Antitechnological factors, such as fiber, tannins, and lipids, can affect the purity and protein extraction yield. Although most are removed or reduced during alkaline solubilization and isoelectric precipitation processes, some remain in the resulting protein isolates. Selection of appropriate legume genotypes and different emerging and sustainable facilitating technologies, such as high-power ultrasound, pulsed electric fields, high hydrostatic pressure, microwave, and supercritical fluids, can be applied to increase the removal of unwanted compounds. Some technologies can be used to increase protein yield. The technologies can also modify protein structure to improve digestibility, reduce allergenicity, and tune technological properties. This review summarizes recent findings regarding the use of emerging technologies to obtain high-purity protein isolates and the effects on techno-functional properties and health.

For the first time, this study addresses the intensification of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) treatments using high-power ultrasound (HPU) for the inactivation of fungal (Aspergillus niger) and bacterial (Clostridium butyricum) spores in oil-in-water emulsions. The inactivation kinetics were analyzed at different pressures (100, 350 and 550 bar) and temperatures (50, 60, 70, 80, 85 °C), depending on the microorganism, and compared to the conventional thermal treatment. The inactivation kinetics were satisfactorily described using the Weibull model. Experimental results showed that SC-CO2 enhanced the inactivation level of both spores when compared to thermal treatments. Bacterial spores (C.butyricum) were found to be more resistant to SC-CO2 + HPU, than fungal (A.niger) ones, as also observed in the thermal and SC-CO2 treatments. The application of HPU intensified the SC-CO2 inactivation of C.butyricum spores, e.g. shortening the total inactivation time from 10 to 3 min at 85 °C. However, HPU did not affect the SC-CO2 inactivation of A.niger spores. The study into the effect of a combined SC-CO2 + HPU treatment has to be necessarily extended to other fungal and bacterial spores, and future studies should elucidate the impact of HPU application on the emulsion's stability.

Interpersonal rehabilitation games, compared to single-player games, enhance motivation and intensity level. Usually, it is complicated to restrict the use of the system to pairs of impaired patients who have a similar skill level. Thus, such games must be dynamically adapted. Difficulty-adaptation algorithms are usually based only on performance parameters. In this way, the patient's condition cannot be considered when adapting the game. Introducing physiological reactions could help to improve decision-making. However, it is difficult to control how social interaction influences physiological reactions, making it difficult to interpret physiological responses. This article aimed to explore the changes in physiological responses due to the social interaction of a competitive game modality. This pilot study involved ten unimpaired participants (five pairs). We defined different therapy sessions: (i) a session without a competitor; (ii) two sessions with a virtual competitor with different difficulty levels; (iii) a competitive game. Results showed a difference in the physiological response in the competitive mode concerning single-player mode only due to the interpersonal game modality. In addition, feedback from participants suggested that it was necessary to keep a certain difficulty level to make the activity more challenging, and therefore be more engaging and rewarding.

Chromatin of male and female gametes undergoes a number of reprogramming events during the transition from germ cell to embryonic developmental programs. Although the rearrangement of DNA methylation patterns occurring in the zygote has been extensively characterized, little is known about the dynamics of DNA modifications during spermatid maturation. Here, we demonstrate that the dynamics of 5-carboxylcytosine (5caC) correlate with active transcription of LINE-1 retroelements during murine spermiogenesis. We show that the open reading frames of active and evolutionary young LINE-1s are 5caC-enriched in round spermatids and 5caC is eliminated from LINE-1s and spermiogenesis-specific genes during spermatid maturation, being simultaneously retained at promoters and introns of developmental genes. Our results reveal an association of 5caC with activity of LINE-1 retrotransposons suggesting a potential direct role for this DNA modification in fine regulation of their transcription.

RESUMEN Introducción: el vólvulo de la vesícula biliar se define como la torsión del órgano sobre su mesenterio a lo largo del eje del conducto y arteria cística, es una enfermedad rara, que ocurre con mayor frecuencia en mujeres ancianas. Presentación del caso: se trata de una paciente femenina de 46 años de edad, de color de piel blanca, con antecedentes patológicos personales de úlcera duodenal, que practica hábitos tóxicos como el fumar y la ingestión de café. No se ha sometido con anterioridad a procederes quirúrgicos. Acude a cuerpo de guardia de Cirugía General del Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Provincial Abel Santamaría Cuadrado de Pinar del Río con dolor en hipocondrio derecho, de leve intensidad y de aproximadamente 24 horas de evolución, acompañado de náuseas y dos vómitos con restos de alimentos. Se le diagnostica vólvulo de vesícula biliar, por lo cual recibe tratamiento quirúrgico. Conclusiones: el vólvulo de vesícula biliar, enfermedad infrecuente de gran similitud clínica a otras patologías de abdomen agudo, hace muy complejo su diagnóstico preoperatorio. No obstante, el advenimiento de las nuevas técnicas imagenológicas maniobradas por especialistas capacitados, junto con la correcta aplicación del método clínico epidemiológico facilitaron la capacidad diagnóstica que permitiera a los cirujanos tomar la decisión terapéutica acertada para el paciente, con resultados satisfactorios.


ABSTRACT Introduction: gallbladder volvulus is defined as the twisting of the organ over its mesentery along the axis of the duct and cystic artery; it is a rare disease, which more frequently occurs in older women. Case report: a 46 year-old, white skin color female patient, with personal pathological history of duodenal ulcer, having smoking and coffee ingestion habits, who has not previously undergone surgical procedures, she comes to the emergency room of the General Surgery Department at Abel Santamaria Cuadrado Provincial General Hospital in Pinar del Río referring pain in right hypochondriac region, of slight intensity and of approximately 24 hours of evolution; accompanied by nausea and two vomits with food remains. He is diagnosed with gallbladder volvulus, undergoing surgical treatment. Conclusions: gallbladder volvulus, an infrequent entity of great clinical similarity to other pathologies of the acute abdomen, makes a very complex pre-surgical diagnosis; nevertheless, the introduction of new imaging techniques performed by trained specialists, together with the accurate application of the clinical epidemiological method facilitated the diagnostic capacity, allowing the surgeons to take a correct and timely therapeutic decision for the patient and with satisfactory results.
